The 31 Days of Horror #12: Paranormal Activity (2009)

Title: Paranormal Activity
Year: 2009.
Sub-Genre: Supernatural, Found Footage.

Much like The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity is one of those movies that seems to divide Horror fans. Some see it as being a terrifying, original, and brilliant effort that made Found Footage relevant again; while others find it to be boring, dull, and not very scary... which was about the same reaction that The Blair Witch Project garnered nearly 10 years previous.

Whichever side of the opinion fence you fall on, you have to admit that Paranormal Activity did breathe some much needed life into the Found Footage sub-genre, and to the age-old Ghost Story as well. As for us, we think that it's a brilliant piece of minimalist filmmaking that offers some genuine scares that stay with you long after the movie has ended. And it did it all on a $15,000 budget.

For the record, we though that PA2 was scarier, but that's just us. We feature the first one here on our Millennium Countdown though, because it re-introduced Found Footage Horror to the mainstream and started a trend that, for better or worse, is still going very strong today.

At least it did it better than most.
