Not all of their releases have been home runs, but for the most part, the movies they give us look and sound great, and are jam-packed with supplements: new 1080p transfers; commentaries; interviews; documentaries; reversible cover art and slipcovers... it's clear that Scream Factory puts plenty of time and effort, and dare we say love, into their releases.
With Scream Factory announcing the release of four of our favorite movies of all-time (Manhunter, Nighthawks, Return of the Living Dead, and Session 9), we started thinking about how much we've loved the discs they've put out over the past few years, and we decided to make a list of what we believe to be the best of them.
- The Top Six section below actually has 9 movies in it, because we couldn't decide which three to get rid of.
- Four of the movies in the Top Nine (Manhunter, Nighthawks, Return of the Living Dead, and Session 9) are available for pre-order only.
- The 36 Blu-rays listed below are only a small sampling of Scream Factory's catalogue, and they have plenty of other titles that are worth checking out.
- These are the best of them, though. According to us.
If you've yet to become familiar with the wonderful world of Scream Factory Blu-rays, then any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right, especially since there's nine of them. I wouldn't know which one to tell you to check out first, but I personally love my From Beyond, Prince of Darkness, and Halloween II discs. If Return of the Living Dead and Session 9 weren't just pre-orders, I'd say start there.
*Most of the links go to Amazon so that you can stream or grab yourself a copy of the movies; our review of the movie (when applicable); or in the case of some of the older & more obscure titles, IMDB, because they simply aren't available to stream or purchase.
Just what I needed for purchase reference! But wait, I never knew In the Mouth of Madness was Scream's release?
ReplyDeleteI must have gotten that one confused with Lord of Illusons. Fixed it.
DeleteThanks for the catch, Mia!
So, Scream is having a great sale this week. Too many buy list, yet, limited budget. Damn.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Scream Factory blu rays. Only trouble is, they are exceedingly hard to get cheap when you reside in the UK as I do.
ReplyDeleteI'll telly ou, there have been some UK Blu-rays that I've ordered, and surprisingly, shippng isn't too bad at all.
DeleteMaybe you could import the ones yourealyl want, and shipping would be reasonable?
Unfortunately, all the Scream Factory blu rays I have purchased so far from America have been quite expensive, as the postage and packing hikes up the price.
ReplyDeleteGhost Story is a really nice one also, more drama than horror.
ReplyDeleteAlso The Town That Dreaded Sundown is fantastic, imo. 1976 Docu style story about the real Texarkana Phantom Murders in 1946. It's not accurate with true events & has some ill-timed "Comedy". But, has several very chilling parts & in the first 5 minutes, you can see where Jason Voorhies likely originated. Far superior to the remake.
ReplyDeleteGreat picture quality & sound & tons of extras.
