May is here, and it's going to be a busy month on the movie-watching front!
Below, we've listed 10 or so of the best
Movies & TV Shows that are seeing
Theatrical,
Blu-ray & DVD,
VOD, or
TV releases this
May; they're the biggest and (potentially) best of them, and at the very least, they are the ones that we're most excited to check out.
*Click the pics below for more info on the
Movie or TV Show, or pre-order them when applicable.

PENNY DREADFUL (MAY 1ST, SHOWTIME) |
"Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, scientist Victor Frankenstein and medium Vanessa Ives unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London."
One of the best shows on
TV is back on
May 1st, and if you have yet to catch this superb
Gothic Horror story, then you're missing out. Seriously, it's excellent, so get with it!

THE WITCH (MAY 3RD, VOD) |
"New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. 'The Witch' is a chilling portrait of a family unraveling within their own fears and anxieties, leaving them prey for an inescapable evil."
The Witch currently sits at
90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and at a healthy
7.1 on IMDB, which is to say that
it was a hit with both critic and audiences alike. It certainly is one of our favorite movies of the year so far, and it's one that we can't wait to revisit when it hits
VOD and
Blu-ray (below.) We need some more
Black Phillip in our lives!

BITE (MAY 6TH, VOD/LIMITED) |
"While on her bachelorette party getaway, Casey, the bride to be, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect. After returning home with cold feet, Casey tries to call off her wedding but before she's able to, she starts exhibiting insect like traits. Between her physical transformation and her wedding anxiety, Casey succumbs to her new instincts and begins creating a hive that not only houses her translucent eggs, but feeds on the flesh of others. As her transformation becomes complete, Casey discovers that everything can change with a single bite."
We're always up for a good
Body Horror movie around here (thanks,
Cronenberg), and
Bite looks like it certainly fits that bill. Reviews for the movie were mostly positive when it made the
Festival rounds last year, and after seeing the trailer, we can see why.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (MAY 6TH, WIDE) |
"With many people fearing the actions of super heroes, the government decides to push for the Anti-Hero Registration Act, a law that limits a heroes actions. This results in a division in The Avengers. Iron Man stands with this Act, claiming that their actions must be kept in check otherwise cities will continue to be destroyed, but Captain America feels that saving the world is daring enough and that they cannot rely on the government to protect the world. This escalates into an all-out war between Team Iron Man and Team Captain America, while a new villain emerges."
The debut of
Black Panther and
Spider-Man. Nuff' said.

WHAT WE BECOME (MAY 13TH, VOD) |
"A family of four is quarantined in their home as a virulent strand of the flu spreads into town and they are forced to the extreme to escape alive."
This little
Apocalyptic infected/zombie flick out of
Denmark has been on our radar for quite some time now, and we're pleased as punch that we'll finally be able to check it out
. We're not expecting
What We Become to change the genre or anything, but it sure looks like it's going to give us enough thrills to keep us entertained... and hopefully, reasonably terrified as well.
|
THE DARKNESS (MAY 13TH, WIDE) |
"A family returns from a Grand Canyon vacation with a supernatural presence in tow."
Aussie director
Greg McLean gave us a modern day classic with
Wolf Creek. With
Darkness,
McLean steps into the
Supernatural realm to deliver the thrills, and with a cast like
Kevin Bacon,
Radha Mitchell, and
Jennifer Morrison at his disposal, we're all kinds of excited to see how this one turns out.
|
DEADPOOL (MAY 10TH, BLU-RAY) |
"Witness the origin story of Wade Wilson, who adopts the alter ego Deadpool after a rogue experiment leaves him with accelerated healing powers...and a dark, twisted sense of humor."
This vulgar
Superhero flick made us laugh our asses off from start to finish, which probably tells you a lot about us. Then again, we never really claimed to be all that classy or highbrow to begin with, now did we?
We loved it, and if you haven't yet had the chance to see
Ryan Reynolds in the role that he was born to play, now is the time. On
Blu-ray.
|
THE WITCH (MAY 17TH, BLU-RAY) |
Yes, we already listen its
VOD release above, we just though it was appropriate to list its
Blu-ray release too.
MUST OWN!
|
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR (MAY 24TH, VOD) |
A family lives an idyllic existence abroad until a tragic accident takes the life of their young son. The inconsolable mother learns of an ancient ritual that will bring him back to say a final goodbye. She travels to an ancient temple, where a door serves as a mysterious portal between two worlds. But when she disobeys a sacred warning to never open that door, she upsets the balance between life and death.
Another movie that looks like a generic
Supernatural Thriller, but that also boasts a really solid cast, is
The Other Side of the Door. The trailer reminds us a lot of lat year's
Out of the Dark for some reason, but let's hope that this one ends up having a little more bite to it.
|
MANHUNTER (MAY 24TH, BLU-RAY) |
"Former FBI profiler Will Graham (William Petersen, To Live and Die in L.A., CSI: Crime Scene Investigation) reluctantly returns to his old job to track a horrific serial killer known as "The Tooth Fairy." But in order to get into the mind of this maniac, Graham must face another: Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox, X-Men 2, RED), the imprisoned psychiatrist whose own insanity almost cost Graham his life… and whose insights into "The Tooth Fairy" could prove as dangerous as the killer himself."
Manhunter has always been one of our favorite movies (we love
Michael Mann), and we've been dying for it to be available in a
Blu-ray version that does it justice... and now thanks to
Scream Factory, it's finally happening!
