Blu-ray & DVD: The Digital Dread Report for September 8th!

Not only is the classic Charles Bronson Serial Killer flick, 10 To Midnight, finally seeing release on Blu-ray, but we're also getting a re-release of Crystal Lake Memories, 2-Pack releases of all of the Friday the 13th movies, Shocker, and The Editor... and that's not even all of the week's noteworthy titles.

So our October Movie Marathon pile will be getting taller, but our wallets will be getting skinnier. Fair trade, I suppose.

10 to Midnight
10 to Midnight (1983), directed by veteran J. Lee Thompson, stars the implacable Charles Bronson as a steely cop facing off against a wily serial killer (Gene Davis) and briefly going down for the count before he rises to take vengeance. Also starring Lisa Eilbacher, Andrew Stevens, Geoffrey Lewis, and Wilford Brimley.

Twilight Time comes out with some great genre releases, but the fact that they are all Limited to 3000 Copies really sucks. And why does that suck? Well, for starters, the discs cost more, and for titles like Fright Night or Christine, they run out quick... because shady assholes buy multiple copies, and then sell them for upwards of $100-$150 to fans who weren't able to get a copy at regular price.

At least this movie has a chance of lasting longer than most Twilight Time releases, as it's a more obscure title. It's also a great movie. Charles Bronson taking on a creepy Serial Killer is a thing of beauty, as this movie dishes out both the Horror and the vengeance. The nod to real-life Serial Killer Richard Speck's slaughter of a bunch of nursing students is truly chilling.

The final scene in this movie is one of the best we've ever seen. Seriously, perfect ending.

Get this one while you can.

Crystal
One of the best Blu-rays that we've ever bought, Crystal Lake Memories is an absolute Must Own for Friday the 13th fans, and Horror fans in general. You can read our review below to see just why we love this Documentary so much, or just trust us, click the pic above, and order a copy now.

It's genuine A+ material.

Speaking of Friday the 13th...

If you didn't grab yourself a copy of the F13th Blu-ray Box Set that came out last year, you can now by the films individually... almost. At least buying them in 2-Packs allows you to pick and choose which pairs you want, especially if you already own the ones that were previously released. *Those would be Parts 1-3, Freddy vs. Jason, and the Remake. Parts 4-8 have never been released outside of the Box Set before.

We already own 1&2 and the remake, so the rest are going into our shopping carts.

Whether you want one or all of them, these discs are a Must Own for Slasher fans.

Dressed to Kill
Brian De Palma ascended to the highest ranks of American suspense filmmaking with this virtuoso, explicit erotic thriller. At once tongue in cheek and scary as hell, Dressed to Kill revolves around the grisly murder of a woman in Manhattan and how her psychiatrist, her brainiac teenage son, and the prostitute who witnessed the crime try to piece together what happened while the killer remains at large. With its masterfully executed scenes of horror, voluptuous camera work, and passionate score, Dressed to Kill is a veritable symphony of terror, enhanced by vivid performances by Angie Dickinson, Michael Caine, and Nancy Allen.

One of Brian De Palma's best movies, Dressed to Kill is an 80's classic that always reminded us a bit of the Giallo classics that we grew up on, albeit one with an Americanized flavor about it. We will be owning this excellent Criterion Collection disc soon.

Rey Ciso (Adam Brooks) was once the greatest editor the world had ever seen. Since a horrific accident left him with four wooden fingers on his right hand, he's had to resort to cutting pulp films and trash pictures. When the lead actors from the film he's been editing turn up murdered at the studio, Rey is fingered as the number one suspect. The bodies continue to pile up in this absurdist giallo-thriller as Rey struggles to prove his innocence and learn the sinister truth lurking behind the scenes.

This straight-up satire of Giallo films is one that we've been anxiously awaiting for months now. It looks like it's going to be right up our alley, even though it stars Paz de la Huerta; we're really not big fans of hers at all.

Now, if someone would just make a new, genuine Giallo film, we'd be thrilled. Anyone?

  • Audio commentary with Adam Brooks, Connor Sweeney and Matt Kennedy.
  • "Making Movies Used to be Fun" documentary.
  • Music and poster featurettes.
  • Astron-6 film festival introduction.
  • Deleted scenes.

Shocker
About to be electrocuted for a catalog of heinous crimes, the unrepentant Horace Pinker transforms into a terrifying energy source. Only young athlete Jonathan Parker, with an uncanny connection to Pinker through bizarre dreams, can fight the powerful demon. The two dive in and out of television programs, chasing each other from channel to channel through stunning scenes of disaster, game shows and old reruns.

One of the late, great Wes Craven's lesser beloved efforts, Shocker is a cheesy, fun, tongue-in-cheek 80's movie that we have fond memories of. Are fond memories enough to make us buy it on Blu-ray? Not today, but probably down the road.

  • NEW Audio Commentary with director of photography Jacques Haitkin, co-producer Robert Engelman, and composer William Goldstein.
  • NEW! Cable Guy – An all-new interview with actor Mitch Pileggi.
  • NEW! Alison's Adventures – An interview with actress Cami Cooper.
  • NEW! It's Alive – An interview with executive producer Shep Gordon.

  • Audio Commentary with writer/director Wes Craven.
  • 2 Vintage Making of SHOCKER featurettes including an interview with Wes Craven.
  • Theatrical Trailer.
  • TV Spots.
  • Radio Spots.
  • Original Storyboard Gallery.
  • Still Gallery.

  • The Wolf Creek 2/Cabin Fever:Patient Zero 2-Pack looks like a good buy. Both were good flicks (although Wolf Creek 2 was far better), and for only $12.99, this set is worth owning.
  • Angst is a very highly-regarded Serial Killer movie from 1983 that we haven't seen, and are going to remedy that with this new Blu-ray now.
  • Misery is a 90's classic that everyone should see.
  • Morituris is the new release by Synapse. We love Synapse, and they always do excellent work with their Blu-ray transfers, but the movie itself has gotten some horrible reviews. We'll probably take a pass on this one.
  • Society is just a 2-Disc version of the Collector's Edition that Arrow released earlier this year. Great movie, great disc, cheaper price.
  • There are also the latest seasons of a bunch of TV Shows hitting Blu-ray this week, Homeland being the only one we'd buy.
  • Everything else, as always, is a crap-shoot.
