31 Days of Creepy Scenes, #24: Tristana Medeiros #31DaysofHorror

They've given us nightmares, given us chills, made us cringe, made us laugh, made us gag, and made us stare at the screen in awe: these are the scenes that pop into our minds when we think of great Horror Films, and we love them all.

*We recommend that if you've never seen these scenes before, that you experience them for the first time unspoiled in the movies that they come from, if you can. With that in mind, we'll try to be as spoiler-free as possible while discussing them; try, being the key word here.
 

If you've never seen [REC], then you're missing out on one of the absolute best Found Footage flicks ever made.

The best scene in the movie, and the one that made the movie one of our favorites of the new millennium, happened at the end: while fighting to stay alive amidst the growing number of infected demon zombies, Angela and her cameraman Pablo decide to make a break for the penthouse, figuring it to be the safest place to hole up, and potentially survive. Once inside the penthouse however, they quickly realize that it's the absolute worst place in t e building that they could be.

It turns out that the penthouse once belonged to an agent of The Vatican who was doing research on a virus that caused demonic possession. The virus apparently started in a young girl named Tristana Medeiros (who was raped by a group of Priests), and while trying to cure her of this viral possession, the virus mutated and became contagious. This idiot Vatican agent then sealed her off in the penthouse, hoping that she would die... but of course, she didn't. Instead, the Medeiros girl grew into a lanky, emaciated monster.

At the point when we see the Medeiros girl shamble into the room (via the camera's night-vision), we feel the same amount of terror and dread that Angela and Pablo do. The creature is searching for them in the darkness, hammer in hand, and as they try to quietly escape, Pablo trips, and everything goes to hell.

I said of this scene in our original review "I don't think I've seen an ending as terrifying as this one in a long while. The last 10 minutes absolutely changed the movie for me." It's honestly one of the creepiest sequences that we've seen in any movie, ever.

For the record [REC] 2 was every bit as good as this movie, and both are must sees for any serious Horror fan.
