31 Days of Creepy Scenes, #23: Puking Her Guts Out #31DaysofHorror

They've given us nightmares, given us chills, made us cringe, made us laugh, made us gag, and made us stare at the screen in awe: these are the scenes that pop into our minds when we think of great Horror Films, and we love them all.

*We recommend that if you've never seen these scenes before, that you experience them for the first time unspoiled in the movies that they come from, if you can. With that in mind, we'll try to be as spoiler-free as possible while discussing them; try, being the key word here.

The Gates of Hell (also known as City of the Living Dead) was the movie that turned us on to the glory that was Italian Horror Cinema of the late 70's & early 80's. Sure, we probably saw a few Argento flicks before this one, but none of them prepared us for the insanity that this Lucio Fulci classic had in store for us.

To this day we still jokingly ask each other "Are you familiar with the Book of Enoch?" Then we laugh.

The beauty of Lucio Fulci's zombie movies is that they made little sense, their goings-on were highly implausible, and some parts of them were almost laughable... and yet they were just about as creepy and atmospheric as a Horror movie could ever hope to get. The man was brilliant, and his films, as flawed as they may have been, were equally so.

The Gates of Hell offers up plenty of great scenes for our viewing pleasure, but the one that truly defines the movie involves Daniela Doria vomiting up her own intestines. The poor girl (who was a Fulci mainstay) had to actually swallow, and then regurgitate, a plate full of tripe. I can't imagine how many takes she went through to get that shot down perfectly, nor can I imagine how anyone could swallow tripe and then force themselves to puke it up, all for a movie. That girl was a trooper.

In the scene, Daniela and her boyfriend (played by Cemetery Man director, Michele Soavi), are making out in a car, when evil Father William Thomas appears out of nowhere, hanging from a tree. When she locks eyes with him, she begins to cry tears of blood, and then proceeds to vomit her intestines up... at one point, they were just flowing out of her, as if coming from some sort of sick intestine faucet or something (they built a fake head for that part.)

It's an unforgettable scene from a classic movie. It's both nauseating and brilliant. And really nauseating.

It's also one that you really need to see.
