The 31 Days of Horror- #24

A Scottish cult, some Haitian Voodoo, some Swann magic, and some backwoods mongoloids...

The 70's
The Wicker Man (1973)- When a cop from the mainland heads to a small isolated island to investigate the disappearance of a little girl, the creepy inhabitants make him wish he's stayed home. Forget that the remake starring Nicholas Cage ever existed, and go rent this movie. It's a really odd one; with strange songs, dances and random orgies that will make you say "WTF?!?" more than once. It's pretty creepy too, and it does have an all time classic horror ending. Check it out.

The 80's
The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)- Not only is this movie about Voodoo creepy as hell, but there were rumors that the entire production was cursed, leading to illness, accidents and even deaths. It was also based on a true story of a man who was actually turned into a zombie in Haiti. Whether you believe any of that or not, one thing is for sure... you don't mess around with voodoo! This is one of Wes Craven's best movies, and a must own.

The 90's
Lord of Illusions (1995)- Here's another Clive Barker gem, basically a noir-ish tale of a detective and his battle with the powers of the supernatural. I've always seen Barker as walking a parallel path as Lovecraft; though instead of elder gods, Barker is all about demons and hell. I love some of the lines in this movie too; "You ever watched a man die? If you watch very closely, you can sometimes see the soul escaping. And if you're very quick, you can catch it." "I've got so much power to give you, Swann. All you have to do is beg." Really good stuff.

The 2000's
Wrong Turn (2003)- Hot chicks + mutant cannibals + plenty of grisly deaths= My kind of movie! Survival Horror can be iffy, sometimes it's good, sometimes not so much. Wrong Turn is luckily one of the good ones. This movie isn't re-inventing thew wheel here, but it does have some really cool kills, and a pretty tense atmosphere that makes you yell at the screen. Also, hot chicks.

See you tomorrow with #23...

  1. This movie was great from the beginning to the end! Very intense..there was nothing else on the mutant killer's agenda but to kill for food.
