Blu-ray & DVD: The Digital Dread Report for 10/25

The last Tuesday before Halloween gives us a few more digital treats to stuff in our bags, including three of the coolest Must Own titles to come along in months.

*Be sure to click the pics below to buy the movies, or even rent them. Or both. Or neither. It really depends on your mood, now doesn't it?

"The nights of terror are unleashed when a professor's thirst for knowledge seals his own demise when he unwittingly unseals a cursed underground crypt in an ancient burial ground!"

Despite being ridiculous on many levels, Burial Ground is one of the best zombie movies ever. The look of the zombies, coupled with the Italian's love of over-the-top gore and bad dubbing, make this one a must see, especially now that Severin Films has given us a brand new Blu-ray version to sink our teeth into.

If for no other reason, this movie must be seen to witness the creepiest mother-son relationship ever committed to film. Bold claim, I know, but this movie goes there.

Special Features:
  • New restored 2K scan with full shot by shot color correction.
  • English and Italian Language Audio Tracks.
  • Villa Parisi - Legacy of Terror – Featurette on the historic house location.
  • Peter Still Lives –Festival Q&A with actor Peter Bark.
  • Just for the Money – Interview with actor Simone Mattioli.
  • The Smell Of Death – Interviews with Producer Gabriele Crisanti and Actress Mariangela Giordano.
  • Deleted/ Extended Scenes/ Shots.
  • Theatrical Trailer.

"For more than fifteen years Police Lieutenant Kinderman (George C. Scott) has been haunted by the death of his friend Father Damien Karras. Now, on the 15th anniversary of the exorcism that claimed the priest's life, Kinderman's world is once again shattered when a boy is found decapitated and savagely crucified. It's just the beginning of a nightmare series of bizarre religious murders."

The only Exorcist sequel that is actually good, Exorcist III: Legion has been given the Special Edition treatment by Scream Factory, and it looks like it's going to be a fantastic disc. The nun scene alone makes the movie worth watching.

This is definite Must Own material.

"When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn't real when the lights went out…and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger…once the lights go out."

Way better than we expected it to be, Lights Out thrilled the hell out of us. It's probably best to give this one a rent if you're on the fence about it, but we'll be adding the Blu-ray to our collection.

  • I'm really curious to check out Blue Underground's 3-Disc Manhattan Baby set, as it's one of the few of Fulci's "bigger" movies that I have yet to see.
  • Nerve was decent enough, but it's more of a rental to us than anything.
  • And everything else, as always, is a crap-shoot.
