31 Days of Creepy Scenes, #16: "Jesus, Wept"

They've given us nightmares, given us chills, made us cringe, made us laugh, made us gag, and made us stare at the screen in awe: these are the scenes that pop into our minds when we think of great Horror Films, and we love them all.

*We recommend that if you've never seen these scenes before, that you experience them for the first time unspoiled in the movies that they come from, if you can. With that in mind, we'll try to be as spoiler-free as possible while discussing them; try, being the key word here.

We could have easily chosen any number of great scenes form either one of the first two Hellraiser movies, because there are just so many great ones in both films. We chose the "Jesus Wept" scene though, because it's the big payoff moment from the first movie, and it also perfectly captures the horrific beauty of Hellraiser in general.

At the end of the movie, a resurrected Frank Cotton (wearing his dead brother's skin) tries to kill his niece Kirsty for selling him out to The Cenobites. Before he can harm her though, Pinhead and his cronies show up, and dozens of hooked chains fly through the air, tearing into his flesh. Realizing that eternal damnation is nigh, he looks one last time at Kirsty and say "Jesus Wept," which in this case is basically him saying "Ah, fuck it!"

*In the following video, the "Jesus Wept" scene begins at around 5:05. It's also in dubbed in German, because a long version this scene is impossible to find online. You'll get the point though.

It's a perfect scene in a quintessential movie, and it makes us want to go back and watch the first two Hellraiser movies right now. For the record, we'd probably also watch parts 3 and 4, because they had their moments, but the first two installments are the truly great ones.
