31 Days of Creepy Scenes, #15: Hello, Daddy

They've given us nightmares, given us chills, made us cringe, made us laugh, made us gag, and made us stare at the screen in awe: these are the scenes that pop into our minds when we think of great Horror Films, and we love them all.

*We recommend that if you've never seen these scenes before, that you experience them for the first time unspoiled in the movies that they come from, if you can. With that in mind, we'll try to be as spoiler-free as possible while discussing them; try, being the key word here.

Odd, perverse, and fairly creepy, 1977's The Sentinel is one our favorite movies from our childhood. As effective as it is (in that 1970's way), it's also got a crazy cast filled with some all-time great actors like Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, Ava Gardner, and John Carradine, to name a few.

In the movie, Cristina Raines plays Alison; a Supermodel moves into an old apartment building only to find herself terrorized at every turn. Turns out that the old building has an odd group of tenants. most of whom are excommunicated Priests who are charged with guarding a gateway to Hell. It's eventually revealed that they want her to take over as the primary "Sentinel" of the gateway, because Supermodels are obviously adept at keeping Demons at bay, and so they tell her "You'd better do this or you won't get into Heaven!"

The creepy scene in question here involves Alison hearing a noise in the middle of the night, and exploring the darkness to find out what it was...because Supermodels are also really brave. While exploring, she comes across her father...

We can't explain why, but that scene gets us every time; we know it's coming, and there's nothing all that terrifying about someone walking across a room, but it ALWAYS gets us.

The rest of the movie is pretty good too. Odd, but good.
