January 2016: A Preview of the Month in Horror

January is here, and it's brought a whole slew of interesting Horror & Genre properties along with it that have all piqued our interest, to different degrees.

Below, we've listed 10 or so of the best Movies & TV Shows that are seeing Theatrical, Blu-ray & DVD, VOD, or TV releases this January; they're the biggest and (potentially) best of them, and at the very least, they are the ones that we're most excited to check out.

*Click the pics below for more info on the Movie or TV Show, and be sure to click the links in the paragraph above to visit our full Release Dates Pages

THE FOREST (JAN 8TH, THEATRICAL)
A young woman searches for her twin sister in a Japanese forest only to find herself surrounded by paranormal forces.

Natalie Dormer lost, afraid and vulnerable in the middle of a big, creepy forest? We're there.

THE BOY (JAN 22ND, THEATRICAL)
An American nanny is shocked that her new English family's boy is actually a life-sized doll. After violating a list of strict rules, disturbing events make her believe that the doll is really alive.

Lauren Cohan all alone, terrified and vulnerable in a mansion with a doll that might just be alive? We're there.

JERUZALEM (JAN 22ND, LIMITED & VOD)
When a couple of American young adults fly to Israel to visit the city of Jerusalem, a biblical nightmare falls upon the city.

Interesting premise, looks great, and it stars Yael Groblgals (Rabies)... I know it's becoming repetitive, but we're there.

JAN 5TH (BLU-RAY & DVD)
A blood-soaked and hilarious horror comedy, DEATHGASM features an amazing original soundtrack of fistbanging metal and practical effects to satisfy metalheads and splatter fans alike. DEATHGASM will gush bodily fluids, rain limbs and tickle your funny bone, before tearing it out and giving you a stiff beating with it.

One of our absolute favorite movies of 2015, Deathgasm is a must for anyone who loves Horror Comedies and Heavy Metal. Can't wait to have this BD in our hands.

CHERRY TREE (JAN 8TH, LIMITED & VOD)
Faith's world is turned upside down after she finds out that her beloved father is dying. When the mysteriously alluring Sissy Young becomes her field hockey coach, Faith finds a compassionate spirit and much-needed mother figure. Little does she know that Sissy is the head of a centuries-old witches' coven that uses the fruit of an ancient cherry tree in a secret ritual that restores life to the dead and dying. Offering to cure her father in exchange for a child, Sissy strikes a bargain with Faith, who suddenly finds herself pregnant with a baby that's growing at an alarming rate.

Something about the trailer for this movie truly skeeved us out, and so we'll be checking it out on release day.

MARTYRS (JAN 22ND, LIMITED THEATRICAL)
A woman and her childhood friend seek out revenge on those who victimized and abused them.
Finally we have the U.S. remake of the modern day French that nobody wanted, Martyrs. We can't imagine that it will be anywhere near what the original was, in terms to storytelling, mood, and pure brutality, but hey, we're going to watch it anyhow.

We're suckers like that.

There will also be plenty of worthwhile titles hitting VOD this month. In addition to the ones already listed above...

  • We're excited to check out Takashi Miike's new effort, Over Your Dead Body.
  • The Abandoned and Intruders look pretty decent.
  • Howl was a decent Werewolf flick (review HERE.)
  • 400 Days and Synchronicity look to be solid Sci-Fi flicks.
  • And we'll finally take some time and watch The Last Witch Hunter and Crimson Peak, both of which we missed back in October when they were in theaters.

  1. Crimson Peak is a masterpiece in my book, while The Last Witch Hunter was a fun popcorn flick. As for the rest, The Forest, The Boy and Martyrs (morbid curiosity) are the ones tha I am the most interested in seeing

  2. Looking forward to Crimson Peak and Jeruzalem.
And Black Mountain Side. I just love snowy, icy horror.
