Blu-ray & DVD: The Digital Dread Report for 4/11

In a world where streaming movies in HD is growing in popularity, it gets harder and harder to justify spending hard earned money on physical media. The fact is though that when done right, nothing makes a movie look or sound better on Blu-ray, so we bring you The Digital dread Report to help you figure out what's worth buying, and what you're better off streaming.

Not only is this week a big one for Blu-ray releases, number-wise, but a lot of those titles make for pretty compelling buys.

  1. The Phantasm Collection from Arrow Video is a Must Own title for fans of the series. The first two movies in the series are classics, and even the "bad" movies in the series are good because we get more Tall Man and sphere action (although we can't speak for Ravager, which we haven't seen.) An excellent buy.
  2. Arrow is also releasing the House: Two Stories this week, and while the House flicks are no Phantasm, they are cheesy 80's fun, and wouldn't be a bad grab.
  3. The Alien Anthology is being re-issued with Digital HD copies included, so if you don't already own this excellent set, then it's extra enticing. You could reaally just grab the disc-only version HERE, and be fine.
  4. The Bye Bye Man didn't do crazy business at the Box Office, and critics were hardly kind to it, but as I've said before, we're suckers for these kinds of glossy, Hollywood fright flicks... at least suckers enough to give it a watch. For the right price, we'd probably blind buy this one.
  5. Cathy's Curse, Demented, and Lurking Fear are B-grade classics from the 70's, 80's and 90's respectively, and are all three worthy of some attention, if you like it old school.
  6. And everything else (which this week seems to be made up of some fairly obscure, B-grade movies), as always, is a crap-shoot.

Be sure to click the pics below to buy the movies, or even rent them. Or both. Or neither. It really depends on your mood, now doesn't it?
