The Best of... Post-Apocalyptic Horror!

Post Apocalyptic movies are some of our favorite kinds of movies to watch. Any work of fiction that involves people trying to survive in a destroyed world, just taps into our fear centers like few others. There are a few different ways that the world can end in these movies: nuclear holocaust, viral outbreak, alien invasion, nature revolting against us, or sometimes, the world even ends by supernatural means.

Many PA flicks are probably more based in the realm of Sci-Fi than they are pure Horror, but even the ones that stray too far from our Horror purview tend to be terrifying in their own right. Putting this list together meant including some of those types of movies, but in the end, they all fit quite neatly under the Post-Apocalyptic banner; even if a few of them are more accurately "End of the World" movies than they are Post-Apocalyptic.

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Post-Apocalyptic flick, Horror or otherwise, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For us, The Road Warrior is probably our all-time fave, although this year's Mad Max: Fury Road comes close. They all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Post-Apocalyptic Sub-Genre though.

  • We hesitated to include The Walking Dead here, for various reasons, but in the end we just couldn't ignore the fact that no other TV Show or movie has ever given us such an in-depth look into a Post-Apocalyptic world before.
  • There are also plenty of great PA movies that aren't on this list, and a few that are that maybe shouldn't be (depending on how you view the term Post-Apocalyptic), but just know that we agonized over those inclusions and omissions.

Below are the rest of our 30 Best Post-Apocalyptic flicks, and of course, a few Honorable Mentions thrown in for good measure. Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks.

*Most of the links go to Amazon so that you can stream or grab yourself a copy of the movies; our review of the movie (when applicable); or in the case of some of the older & more obscure titles, IMDB, because they simply aren't available to stream or purchase.

  1. You might want to check out "Before the Fall" (2008) and "The Last Days" (2013) too.

"Melancholia" (2011) and "Last Night" (1998) would fit in as well. There's also "Carriers" (2009), "The Day After Tomorrow" (2004), and "The Colony" (2013).

From TV, you could add every incarnation of "Survivors" (which very much predates and explores the same territory as "The Walking Dead", plus "Day of the Triffids", "The Leftovers", "Jericho", "The Tripods", and all those other "Left Behind" style TV movies.

Yeah, there's lot of them. :)

  2. Carriers and The Colony almost made the honorable mentions. It's so hard trying to decide which movie should or shouldn't make it, that after the ones that you consider "The Best" it's all really just hit or miss, you know?

And for the record we LOVE Jericho. Still pissed at how they handled that show.

    1. Wyrmwood was very good, but it didn't make the cut.

Cyborg 1989 with Mr Jean Claude Van Damme must have his place there. That the 1rst time I see this sub genre and it s different to survivor sub genre. it s original .

    1. Cyborg ALMOST made the cut, and in fact, we had the movie poster all sized and ready to go...

That's the problem with lists though; no matter what you do, there are always great movies that get left out.

Excellent movie though, foor what it was.

  5. I love the Post-Apocalyptic genre and I'm always glad to see Doomsday getting some much deserved love.

Besides the omission of Cyborg, the admission of The Walking Dead and maybe some of the ranking it's a damn near perfect list with some great inclusions.

I feel it my duty as a genre-loving cinephile to suggest "Turbo Kid" and "Bounty KIller" (Both currently on Netflix for convenient viewing pleasure) which in my opinion are two of the best Post-Apocalypse flicks in recent history. Not only are they badass and utterly enjoyable but are two of the most sincere love letters to the genre that I've seen.

    1. Cyborg probably should have been included, and TWD was included because it's a great view of Post-Apocalyptic society. I see why you take issue with it though.

Turbo Kid was great, but have yet to check out Bounty Killer. Will have to get on that soon.

    2. I've already re-watched Turbo Kid several times (I'm actually re-watching it as I write this.) Love to see a your review on it. Don't know if you know this but it's based off one of the unincluded shorts submitted for the T (T for Turbo) in ABC's of Death.

And yeah again Bounty Killer is a great watch. Very surprising flick when I saw it I was not expecting it to be as good as it was. Totally loved it.

  8. I'm a bit confused. More than half of these movies aren't horror movies...like at all.

    1. They're Post-Apocalyptic movies. some of them may fall under the realm of Sci-Fi, but they're all genre-relevant.

If all we did was watch and talk about pure Horror movies, we'd be pretty bland.
