Blu-ray & DVD: The Digital Dread Report for 7/18

In a world where streaming movies in HD is growing in popularity, it gets harder and harder to justify spending hard earned money on physical media. The fact is though that when done right, nothing makes a movie look or sound better on Blu-ray, so we bring you The Digital dread Report to help you figure out what's worth buying, and what you're better off streaming.

  • Lake Alice is the release that we covet the most this week. It looks like one hell of a fun slasher flick, and it's one that we'll be checking out in short order.
  • Kong: Skull Island is the big release this week. We saw it, and it was a fun, big action flick that boasted a bunch of great looking monsters and action, but I'm not sure that I'd buy it on Blu-ray. It's got a top-notch cast (especially Brie Larson whom we adore), but it didn't rock our world the way we expected it to. Maybe we need to give it another watch to be sure?
  • Another Brie Larson movie hitting Blu-ray this week is the Ben Wheatley crime thriller, Free Fire. Again, we saw it, but weren't blown away by it. It's one of those movies that mostly takes place in one location, and it's got some great dialogue, characters, and plenty of violence, but it felt lacking. Still, it's a cool flick to check out if you like crime flicks.
  • Buster's Mal Heart has gotten some solid reviews, but even after watching the trailer, I'm not sure what the movie is about. We love Rami Malek and Kate Lyn Sheil though, and it looks well-crafted. so it might be worth a rental, at least.
  • And we're huge fans of The 100 around here (don't judge us!), but the fact that the CW show is only being released on DVD and not Blu-ray means we'll save our $$$, and just re-watch it on Netflix if the urge takes us. You know, in HD, like it was meant to be watched.
  • And everything else, as always, is a crap-shoot.

Be sure to click the pics below to buy the movies, or even rent them. Or both. Or neither. It really depends on your mood, now doesn't it?

  1. Just watched Lake Alice ... don't waste your time! No redeeming aspect whatsoever.
