The Best of... Slasher Flicks!

Considering all of the great Slasher Flicks that have been released over the years, it was really hard to narrow all of them down to 30, to make a Best of list that didn't leave some very deserving titles out in the cold. We debated, shuffled, and added and dropped titles to and from this list, until we finally just had to say enough, and go with our gut.

To some of the great Slasher Flicks that didn't make this list, we are truly sorry. You are still fantastic.

When we think of Slasher Flicks, we mainly think of masked killers, blood, clever kills, and promiscuous teens in various stages of undress; because that's what they are, for the most part. There are plenty of Slashers that offer more than just visceral thrills though, giving us things like atmosphere, tension, genuine terror, levity, and even solid stories that help fray our nerves in different and clever ways.

No matter what variety they come in though, the Slasher Flick is an important staple in the Horror Genre, and one that most Horror Fanatics tend to embrace with open arms.

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Slasher Flick, any of the Classic movies in our Top Six will do you right. All 6 of them are true Classics for a reason; they changed the Horror Genre as a whole, each to different degrees, and they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to a Sub-Genre that is usually dismissed as being nothing more than a vehicle for cheap thrills.

  • A lot of the movies on this list are going to be older (70's & 80's), because most great Slasher came to be during that time period. We did feel compelled, however, to include a few more recent efforts, but only a very few.
  • There are great sequels from Slasher franchises like F13th or Nightmare on Elm Street, etc…that we left off of the list, so that some of the lesser known, but equally great, Slasher efforts could get some much deserved recognition, though there are a few included.
  • We also shied away from including too many Giallo & Giallo-like movies on this list, because they’re getting their own Best of treatment soon enough.
  • We also left remakes off of the list for the same reasons stated above.

Below are the rest of our 30 Best Slasher Flicks, and of course, a few Honorable Mentions thrown in for good measure. Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks.

*Most of the links go to Amazon so that you can stream or grab yourself a copy of the movies; our review of the movie (when applicable); or in the case of some of the older & more obscure titles, IMDB, because they simply aren't available to stream or purchase.

I am a big fan of slasher's movies. there so many slasher's movies that nobody need to see , that my opinion. I have lost over 500$ to buy many slasher's movies with no budgets, no good story, no good acting and rape . Madman 1982, hell night 1981 and venom 2005 are good. have a good day J.S Greer

    1. Fair enough, Anon.

Hell Night is very good, and Venom was better than most.

  2. No love for Hatchet!?
Also I have always loved Friday the 13th part 6. And actually 7, 8 and X too. Oh, and Freddy vs Jason. So many, haha.
Anyway, good list. A lot of good ones I've seen, but also some I haven't, that I will definitely check out.

    1. There are about 20 movies ahead of hatchet that didn't make this list, so no. Fun flick though.

Loved all of those sequels too!
