Blu-ray & DVD Releases: The Digital Dread Report for January 20th

It's not looking very impressive on the Blu-ray and DVD front this week, with only a few releases being truly notable, at least from where we're sitting.

Annabelle was a well-made movie that bored us to tears, and barely scared us at all. Shame, that, because the Annabelle doll thoroughly creeped us out in The Conjuring, and we were hoping for more of the same with her solo joint. No such luck. Still, there were lots of people who loved the movie, so it remains a pretty big release.

Lucy was fun for an Action/Sci-Fi hybrid. Fun like an acid trip that makes no sense and leaves you in a daze, but fun, none the less. It's not quite the return to form that we were hoping for from director Luc Besson, but it's fairly close. Besides, Scarlett Johansson is making quite the career out of kicking ass on-screen lately, and she looks great doing it, and what's not fun about that?

White Bird in a Blizzard was a decent little Mystery/Thriller which stars Eva Green and Shailene Woodley... and which one of those lovely ladies gets naked in this one? Not Eva Green, that's who. Bold move, Ms. Woodley. Kudos. Decent movie.

..and that's it. We haven't seen The Atticus Institute, The Zero Theorem, or La Belle Captive, so we can't really comment on them.I mean, we could, but it would all be a bunch of lies and supposition, and we can't have that, now can we?

There are lots of new Horror titles hitting the DVD bin this week, but with the exception of Coherence and Wolves, they all look to be lower budget, B-movies.

Do with them as you will.

  1. Rented Gnome Alone from Amazon Instant tonight. While it wasn't anything super great or anything (but who would expect it to be? Not me), it was far more entertaining than the WWE take on the Leprechaun from last year. It is similar in tone to the early Warwick Davis films with Verne spouting off a bunch of corny one liners. There is a decent amount of gore thrown in along with T&A. Apparently, some college frats have their own sex dungeons, complete with naked girls on swings or in cages.

    1. You know, I have a nearly completed Gnome Alone review sitting here that I'm hesitating to publish, mainly because the movie was really bad, and there's not much I can say about it that isn't negative or mean-spirited.

It absolutely is better than that WWE Leprechaun abomination though :)
