What we have here is one hell of a week to be a Blu-ray/DVD lover.
We're finally able to get our mitts on one of the most anticipated Blu-ray releases of all time; Jaws. We're personally picking up the DigiBook version, but it's the movie we're truly after. Part of Universal's 100th Anniversary Celebration, it's a gorgeous transfer and an absolute must own title. *FYI, all of the Universal 100th Anniversary titles come with codes that enable you to win at least a $3 coupon off of another anniversary title. As if that wasn't a big enough release, we also have The Hunger Games to look forward to on Saturday; we know, it's an odd day of the week for a Home Video release, but it happens sometimes. It's a solid flick that isn't just for kids or lovelorn teenage girls, so don't sleep on this one. We're in for the Target 3-Disk Exclusive.
Oh no, the awesomeness isn't done yet! The Raid: Redemption hits stores today, and if you want to see one of the craziest, most awesome martial arts flicks to come along in forever, you'll want to grab a copy of this. If you don't own any of the movies in the Sylvester Stallone Collection, you should think about picking it up; Lock-Up we can live without, but First Blood and Copland are both top notch flicks that should be owned.
We also loved Kill List, and will be adding the Blu-ray to our video trove. For Dexter fans, now is your chance to grab season six before season seven starts this fall.
Still more good ones, almost done though... Juan of the Dead was a fun zombie movie that might be worth a spin for you, and Fallen is a cool little Denzel Washington classic that we love. The Snowtown Murders is a great movie that deserves to be seen, although it's a rent for us. All three of these are at least worth a watch.
Finally, the last of the good movies for the week, but certainly not least, is Shaft. John Shaft just might be the baddest Detective ever, in addition to being one of the coolest cats of all time. It's a great 70's action flick, and you really owe it to yourself to see it if you haven't. It's a true classic.
As for the rest of the week's releases... well, we've talked enough already. They mostly look to be crap-shoots anyhow, so caveat emptor. On a less busy week, we'd probably give some of them a closer look. Let us know if any of them turn out to be good, would you?
The Hunger Games, Kill List, Juan of the Dead and The Raid are definitely on my watch list. I feel like this group of movies will give me a good mix of what’s new in one weekend. So on my quest for what should be one of the best movie weekends in recent memory, I stopped by the movie kiosk around the corner. I was pretty disappointed when none were available (I know The Hunger Games doesn’t come out until Saturday). A Dish co-worker suggested trying Blockbuster @ Home which delivers the movies straight to my door. Blockbuster even allowed me to reserve a copy of The Hunger Games! How awesome is that? It cuts the unneeded trips to the kiosk and saves me some gas too. Needless to say, I’m going to have a good movie weekend anyway especially now that I’m not playing Sherlock Holmes.
