What's New on VOD This Week? (5/23-5/27)

Only 3 titles of note to stream this week, but all three are pretty big releases.

*Be sure to click the pics to rent the movies, or watch their trailers. Or both. Or neither. It really depends on your mood, now doesn't it?

*If you aren't already a member, you should really give Amazon Prime a shot, especially if you order movies on the regular like we do, because the free two-day shipping pays for itself after around 10 orders. It's got a hell of a free movie library too. Check it out for free HERE.

  • Raw is the #1 movie to stream this week, and we'll be checking it out once all of the Memorial Day festivities are over.
  • Berlin Syndrome is a solid Bad Romance thriller that stars the lovely Teresa Palmer as a girl who travels to Berlin and meets the wrong guy, which of course leads to some intense creepiness. We're all in on this one.
  • John Wick: Chapter 2 was awesome. Not quite as good as the first one (but it comes close) it's a worthy sequel that sets up a third movie in a really interesting way.
  • Happy Streaming!

Blu-ray & DVD: The Digital Dread Report for 5/30

In a world where streaming movies in HD is growing in popularity, it gets harder and harder to justify spending hard earned money on physical media. The fact is though that when done right, nothing makes a movie look or sound better on Blu-ray, so we bring you The Digital dread Report to help you figure out what's worth buying, and what you're better off streaming.

May is on the way out the door, but it's leaving us with one more batch of physical media goodness to enjoy.

Collide looks like a cool Thriller, and the Evil Ed disc from Arrow is one that we'll probably check out, but this week's true Must Own for us is The Blackcoat's Daughter.

Finally available on Blu-ray, The Blackcoat's Daughter (read our review HERE) was delayed twice in 2016, and then finally pushed back to an unknown release date in 2017 is beyond us, because it's one of the best movie-watching experiences that we had all of last year, and it would have been a perfect Halloween Season flick.

The way that the movie's plot twisted and turned through such a quiet, bleak atmosphere just grabbed us and thrilled us in all the right ways. Emma Roberts and Kiernan Shipka were fantastic (and suitably creepy) as the main characters, and Satan was terrifying as usual.

It's a great flick, and one that we're adding to our collection without hesitation.

  • And everything else, as always, is a crap-shoot.

Be sure to click the pics below to buy the movies, or even rent them. Or both. Or neither. It really depends on your mood, now doesn't it?

What's New on Netflix in May?

As popular as Netflix is, it's not easy trying to figure out what they add and when, because for some ridiculous reason, they don't really tell you. Their "What's New on Netflix" and "Recently Added" sections are fine, but they're very, very limited.

New movies and TV Shows sneak onto Netflix all the time, but unless you're searching through the titles and randomly come across something that looks new, you'd never know that they're there... Especially when it comes to anything Horror.

With that in mind, we decided to offer an on-going list of What's New on Netflix, so that you can stay on top of what's been recently added, as far as both Horror Movies and TV Shows go. We've broken it up by section, to include Recently Added titles and New & Noteworthy titles that are older, yet newly-added.

Here’s what Netflix has to offer us in May.

Short Film Saturday: The Thing in the Apartment (2015)

It's got to be hard making short films, as no matter how great they may be, as they kind of disappear into the nether after their initial Festival Circuit runs are finished, if they are even lucky enough to get one.

That's why we've decided to showcase some of the many great Horror Shorts that are out there floating around the Interwebs: some are scary, some are fun, and every now and then, we even find one that's a work of art.

The bottom line is that plenty of time and effort went into making them, so they at least deserve to be seen, don't they?

"There's something in Lindsay's apartment..."

Hopefully you watch this short in the dark, in bed, alone.

I have to imagine that being home alone late at night, and hearing a weird, out of place noise is something that freaks most people out. This short film makes great use of that concept, and adds a mongoloid creature to the proceedings that makes it even more terrifying.

This was a pretty well-put together effort, and it was creepy in all the right ways.It was 10 minutes of quality that I wish we could get from more 90-minute productions.

And Melia Renee, who plays Sam, needs to be in more.... tank tops or movies, take your pick.

Short Film Saturday: The Birch (2016)

It's got to be hard making short films, as no matter how great they may be, as they kind of disappear into the nether after their initial Festival Circuit runs are finished, if they are even lucky enough to get one.

That's why we've decided to showcase some of the many great Horror Shorts that are out there floating around the Interwebs: some are scary, some are fun, and every now and then, we even find one that's a work of art.

The bottom line is that plenty of time and effort went into making them, so they at least deserve to be seen, don't they?

"A bullied schoolboy takes drastic measures against his tormenter, summoning an ancient being in the woods using a spellbound book passed down through the generations of his family. "

We came across this one while randomly surfing YouTube, and we're glad we did.

The production value on display here is excellent, and it really plays more like a proof of concept piece rather than a standalone short film, which is to say that this movie would be great as a feature length effort.

That damn creature is a thing of nightmares.

Random Picture Round-Up: Hotties Edition

We spend a lot of time here at THC searching for great pictures to use in our reviews, for our banners, and for whatever else strikes our fancy. It's not always easy finding the perfect screenshot, but when we do find pictures that make us laugh, say "What the hell?," or are just plain awesome, we save them.

Unfortunately, we never use them all, and so they just sit there in our picture folder, waiting... which is why we decided to start posting them in random groups on a weekly basis!

They might even help you to decide what to watch.

This week, we're focusing on images of the various ladies that make up the movies we've been watching, and are eager to see, because we need their beauty to offset the darkness.

  • You can click each pic to find out what movie they're from, if you don't recognize them. The links go to either IMBD or Amazon.
  • The movie's titles are also in the file name of the pictures, if you decide to save them to your computer.
  • Enjoy!
