The Best of... Found Footage!

The Found Footage/POV/Hand-Held/First Person sub-genre is a derisive one at best. FF flicks can be intense and terrifying, making you feel like you;'re actually watching real footage of real people being stalked, haunted, etc... and those are the good ones. Found Footage flicks can also be cheap, shoddy, predictable, and overly-familiar, which basically renders them useless as far as scares go. Those are the bad ones.

Below, we've tried to cull the absolute best "Footage" movies from the hundreds and hundreds that are out there, which was no easy feat. We tried our best to be objective about which movies made the list, and which ones didn't, but in the end, our personal tastes played more of a role here than they usually do when we make a Best of list.

  • There will no doubt be a few movies missing from this list that will make people cry foul; Grave Encounters and The Den are two good examples of popular FF flicks that many Horror fans loved, but did nothing for us. Sorry.
  • We've also included a few movies in our Honorable Mention section that might raise some eyebrows: End of Watch isn't Horror at all, and Sinister may have some great Found Footage in it, but is by no means a FF flick. They both do the FF thing extremely well however, and so here they are.
  • The Top Six for this list was a tough one to put together, mainly because a lot of the movies below could easily be at the top of the list. Each of the movies in The Top Six were included for specific reasons, but that doesn't mean that Home Movie or The Tunnel weren't as good. Rankings are a flexible thing, so take them as you will.

If you're in the mood for a truly quality Found Footage Flick, any of the movies in our Top Six will do you right. For our money, Noroi and [REC] are probably the best (and most terrifying) of them, but then again they all bring their own unique and terrifying vision to the Found Footage Sub-Genre.

Below are the rest of our 30 Best Found Footage Flicks, and of course, a few Honorable Mentions thrown in for good measure. Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks.

*Most of the links go to Amazon so that you can stream or grab yourself a copy of the movies; our review of the movie (when applicable); or in the case of some of the older & more obscure titles, IMDB, because they simply aren't available to stream or purchase.

Farewell, Hannibal

It's been a great three seasons, but tonight, Hannibal leaves us for good.

To say that Hannibal pushed boundaries -both artistically, and with its crazy gory visuals- is a massive understatement, so it's not really a huge surprise that it never had bigger ratings. It's a genuine shame, but not a surprise. For the most part, people like their TV Shows simple, safe, and familiar; that's why there are 8 different CSI's, and 12 different Law & Order's. That's also why every comedy on CBS is the same, bland, laugh track-filled waste of airtime.

Seriously, let CBS play a few episodes of Big Bang Theory without the laugh track on, and people wouldn't know where to laugh. Because it's not funny.

Anyhow, I'm getting off point. Apologies.

"THAT WAS RUDE."
Love it or hate it, you have to at least respect Hannibal for having the balls to tell its story on its own terms, never giving a shit what the Network might say or do in reaction to the level of R-Rated craziness that made the show what it was; it was vile, it was disturbing, it was nasty, it was smart, it was ethereal, it was brilliant, it was groundbreaking.

And for the record, as much as we despise NBC for cancelling Hannibal, we have to give the Network a ton of credit for not only giving a show like that a chance to begin with, but for giving it three seasons to do its thing, and hopefully find a bigger audience. So many shows with similar ratings get the axe before their first season is even finished, but they gave Bryan Fuller and crew three seasons to run wild. Which they did.

That took balls too. Thank you, NBC.

Will Hannibal reappear on another Network down the road? Will we get a Hannibal movie (or two) every few years, so that we can once again bask in its sick, twisted, gorgeous, fantastic world? Maybe. Maybe not. We can hope though, that Hannibal isn't finished, and that's enough for us, I suppose. Because it has to be.

So thank you Bryan Fuller and crew; thank you Hugh, Mads, Laurence, Caroline, Gillian, Scott, Hettienne, Aaron, Raul, Katharine, Kasey, Lara Jean, Gina, Richard, Rutina, Eddie and everyone else who made up the fantastic cast, whether guest star or top-billed; thank you NBC for at least giving Hannibal a chance, and we mean a real, legitimate chance; thank you Gaumont; thank you De Laurentis; and thank you to all of the #Fannibals who allowed us to become a part of their lives during this fantastic run.

We will miss you all.

The series finale of Hannibal airs Tonight at 10 P.M. on NBC

Furious 7: Dominic and his crew thought they'd left the criminal mercenary life behind. They'd defeated international terrorist Owen Shaw and went their separate ways. But now, Shaw's brother, Deckard Shaw, is out killing the crew one by one for revenge. Worse, a Somalian terrorist called Jakarde and a shady government official called "Mr. Nobody" are both competing to steal a computer terrorism program called "God's Eye," that can turn any technological device into a weapon. Torretto must reconvene with his team to stop Shaw and retrieve the God's Eye program while caught in a power struggle between the terrorist and the United States government.

Sure, you may have to check your brain at the door, but for pure action-packed fun, it gets no better than the Fast & Furious movies. Furious 7 was all kinds of crazy fun, even though it was a bit of a bummer to watch Paul Walker do his thing, knowing that he died so tragically.

Fun stuff, and definitely worth a rental if you need an action fix.

Queen of Earth: Two women who grew up together discover they have drifted apart when they retreat to a lake house together.

This one appeared on Amazon Instant out of nowhere; we're usually on top of release dates, and had no idea that Queen of Earth had even been slated for release yet. Anywho, this one looks all kinds of bizarre and intense, and Elisabeth Moss is aces in our book, so we'll definitely be checking it out asap.

Teen Lust: An awkward high school student strives to lose his virginity before his parents and their Satanic cult can sacrifice him to the devil.

We're really hoping that Teen Lust ends up being silly fun, instead of just plain old silly. There hasn't been very much hype or promotion about this one leading up to release, but we're remaining optimistic; it's got Pam from True Blood and Carey Elwes in it, so it can't be all that bad... right?

When Animals Dream: 16-year old Marie lives on a small island with her seriously ill mother and her father, who takes care of the family. But suddenly mysterious deaths happen and Marie can feel something strange happening to her body.

Finally we have When Animals Dream; a solid little Danish "Were" flick that we saw and enjoyed earlier this year. It's definitely worth a rental, but check out our review below for a more in-depth appraisal.
