It's got to be hard making short films, as no matter how great they may be, as they kind of disappear into the nether after their initial Festival Circuit runs are finished, if they are even lucky enough to get one.

That's why we've decided to showcase some of the many great Horror Shorts that are out there floating around the Interwebs: some are scary, some are fun, and every now and then, we even find one that's a work of art.

The bottom line is that plenty of time and effort went into making them, so they at least deserve to be seen, don't they?

We got to watching these Scary Endings shorts over the past few days, and we like what they've got to offer, which is little burts of nasty fun.

We'll take any chance to see Jordan Ladd in a genre project when we can, and Voyeur reminded us of why: she's got a likeable quality about her, and she's one hell of a Scream Queen.

Not bad at all.

Short Film: Am I Beautiful? (2017)

"Based on the Japanese Urban Legend of Kuchisake-onna (The Slit-Mouthed Woman) She'll ask you a question, answer correctly and she'll spare your life but at a cost - May and Zach are moving into their new home unbeknownst to the evil spirit haunting their bathroom mirror - the Slit-Mouthed Woman."

The legend of the Slit-Mouthed Woman is a creepy one, and it actually had people in a panic when it was first spread throughout Japan in the late 70's. This short explores that legend in gruesome detail.


Alright, so the CGI wasn't the greatest, but there's something about Am I Beautiful? that resonates. Probably because the Urban Legend is so damned effective.

Candice Fox is pretty effective too.

Short Film: Givertaker (2016)

"An ambitious teen conducts an ancient ritual to enact petty revenge on those who she believes have wronged her."

By design, Givertaker looks like it's got a very strong Goosebumps vibe going on, and as fun as that, and other YA series of the 90's were, we're curious to see where this one takes us.


"Arcanum Pictures is Peter S. Hall and Paul Gandersman. Together they have produced the feature films ‘My Sucky Teen Romance,’ ‘Grow Up, Tony Phillips,’ and ‘There Will Be No Stay,’ as well as a number of shorts and commercials. Their first project as a writing-directing team is ‘Givertaker,’ a short film set within the larger world of ‘Dead Kids Club.’"

Imagined as a part of a series of interwoven stories about a town where teens dabble in the dark arts, Givertaker is an impressive effort that begs more installments. It's very well made, and it has the perfect Teen Terror vibe about it.

"Just in time for Halloween, DAMSELS is a short horror film about dating gone deliciously wrong. Starring Rachel Faulkner (The Possession Experiment, Ride Along 2), Clarke Wolfe (Slashed! The Musical, Syfy, Nerdist), Cameron West (Ghost Road Pictures), and Jason C. Brown, DAMSELS is the story of a couple of gals out for a night of food and fun."

This short film is so new, that it doesn't even have an IMDB page yet.

Well, that was alright. Short and sweet, Damsels has an interesting premise, but it felt like more of a quick diversion to us than anything else.

These things happen.

Random Picture Round-Up: Short Film Saturday Edition

We spend a lot of time here at THC searching for great pictures to use in our reviews, for our banners, and for whatever else strikes our fancy. It's not always easy finding the perfect screenshot, but when we do find pictures that make us laugh, say "What the hell?," or are just plain awesome, we save them.

Unfortunately, we never use them all, and so they just sit there in our picture folder, waiting... which is why we decided to start posting them in random groups on a weekly basis!

They might even help you to decide what to watch.

Well, as a proof-of-concept thing, House Mother certainly impresses. It looks sharp, is full of hot girls acting inappropriately, it's got an interesting premise, we'd pay to see 90-minutes more of it. 

Oh yeah, and that's the one and only Barbara Crampton underneath that Demon make-up. *Although we've got to admit, it looked a bit campy. Go simple on the Demon look, guys.

Here's to hoping that this one gets the full-length treatment.

Another short from Neill Blomkamp and his Oats Studios collective has been gifted to us, and this time it's an animated short made with the game engine Unity.

Let's check it out.


Adam: The Mirror is a gorgeous piece of work that makes me wish I could both see the whole story at feature length and play the video game. Even though it's not a video game. But it could be.

It's super short, but it's captivating as hell.

With as many movies and TV shows out there that are complete shit these days, I can't fathom how studios aren't throwing money at Blomkamp to provide them with watchable product to shop to audiences.
