Blu-ray & DVD: The Digital Dread Report for 8/23

TV Shows about Deadites and zombies are what we're after this week on the Blu-ray front (because nothing is better than binging our favorite shows in the best quality possible), and it looks like TV shows in general are the focus of this week's Blu-ray crop.

*Be sure to click the pics below to buy the movies, or even rent them. Or both. Or neither. It really depends on your mood, now doesn't it?

"Bruce Campbell reprises his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons -- personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its "Evil" grip."

Ash vs. Evil Dead was a crazy fun TV show that gave us the Evil Dead fix that we've been fiending for since Army of Darkness; it's basically as close to an Evil Dead 4 as we're ever going to get, and we're not complaining.

We do wish that Starz would have given us more than 30-minutes of its greatness every week (30-minutes just isn't enough), but we're happy that we got any new Evil Dead material starring Bruce Campbell at all. Again, no complaints.

We're happy to own this set and revisit it in Blu-ray quality often.

"Season Six starts with Alexandria's safety shattered by multiple threats. To make it, the people of Alexandria will need to catch up with our survivors' hardness while many of Rick's people will need to take a step back from the violence and pragmatism they've needed to embrace. These reversals won't happen easily, or without conflict. But now Rick's group is fighting for something more than survival... They're fighting for their home, and they will defend that at any cost, against any threat, even if that threat comes from within."

Say what you will about The Walking Dead (and you could criticize it on many different points), but it's one of the few shows that actually compels us to tune in every week, live, to find out what happens. Season 6 took things in a whole new direction and ended on a massive cliffhanger that will no doubt make the Internet explode when it's resolved this October during the Season 7 premiere.

If you're like us and love this show, then it has to be a part of your Blu-ray library.

Special Features:

  • Episode 616: Last Day On Earth -- The Extended Version (Blu-ray exclusive)
  • Audio Commentaries
  • Deleted Scenes
  • The Making of The Walking Dead
  • In Memoriam
  • 601: Out of The Quarry
  • Guts & Glory: The Death of Nicholas
  • Strength in Bonds
  • Negan: Someone to Fear
  • The Face of Death: Iconic Walkers of The Season

  • Der Bunker is an odd looking movie that we're curious about, because Artsploitation Films has a pretty solid track record for their Blu-ray releases.
  • The Huntsman: Winter's War looks like a fun sequel, even though it didn't fare so well at the U.S. Box Office
  • Speaking of other TV shows... The Strain is what it is, same goes for Lucifer. Narcos was a pretty good Thriller about the drug trade in Colombia, but it's available to stream for free on Netflix, not not sure if it's one to buy or not.
  • And everything else, as always, is a crap-shoot.
