SXSW starts today! (With Evil Dead and V/H/S/2)

For those of you heading to Austin, Texas for this year's SXSW, you're in for a treat or two tonight. Creepy, horrific treats.

For those of you that may not know what in the hell a SXSW is...

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Conferences & Festivals (March 8-17, 2013) offer the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies. Fostering creative and professional growth alike, SXSW® is the premier destination for discovery.

For us, it means cool movies, especially those of the Genre variety.

9:45 P.M.

In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Tonight at 9:45 PM CST, SXSW is hosting the World Premiere of the Evil Dead remake. Love the idea of this remake or not, its happening. In all fairness, the trailers look pretty damn good, and by tomorrow morning, we'll get first word on how much it either rocks or sucks. We're just mainly hoping that no trace of Devil Coby's putrid writing can be seen on screen, because Juno and Jennifer's Body already exist, and the Evil Dead needs none of that snarky tween mojo shit.

God, please just let it not suck.

9:30 PM

Mitchell (Josh Duhamel) and Carter (Dan Fogler), life-long friends who have drifted apart, are on a road trip when their old pickup breaks down, leaving them stranded on an isolated desert road. Nobody can pick apart a man like his best friend, and as the relentless elements of the desert grind them down, they start to attack each other’s life decisions with unwavering brutality. As they question who they are and who they could have been, their agitation leads to physical confrontation and ultimately knife-wielding madness, and what begins as an inconvenience becomes a very real life or death struggle.

We're all for watching Josh Duhamel getting his ass beaten to a bloody pulp, so, looks fun to us.

11:59 P.M.

Recently fired and facing eviction, a new dad has his life turned upside down when he meets a wealthy couple who offer a path to financial security... but at a price.

The lovely Sara Paxton and her Innkeepers together again in the same movie... we're all for that.

11:59 P.M.

Searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his abandoned house and find another collection of mysterious VHS tapes. In viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be terrifying motives behind the student’s disappearance.

We thought the first V/H/S was decent enough, and word is that its sequel is better, so we're fairly stoked.

Whether the films end up being good or bad, SXSW is one hell of a cool place for Indie Filmmakers to show off their wares.

Don't let us down, Jane Levy, we're counting on you.
